Top 10 Fun Run Safety Tips
- Warm up properly. Cold November mornings and cold muscles are a common injury combination.
- Dress in layers you can shed. You'll warm up quickly once moving, even in cold weather.
- Know the course and any road closures or crossings ahead of time.
- Stay hydrated in the days before, even for a shorter race distance.
- Nothing new on race day — don't try new shoes, gear, or pace for the first time.
- Watch for slippery leaves, wet pavement or early ice on the course.
- Know your own pace and don't get pulled out too fast by race-morning adrenaline.
- Plan your route and corral position if running with kids or a stroller.
- Cool down and stretch after. Most fun-run injuries show up in the hours after, not during.
- Check in with anyone in your group with a heart condition. Even short races raise cardiac risk for unconditioned participants.
